Welcome to W.C.I. Arts & Culture S.H.S.M
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This career-focused program is designed to help prepare students to make the transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the workplace. A SHSM enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and on pursuing their postsecondary goals. In a highly competitive economy, the SHSM also provides students with additional qualifications that will make students more marketable in the job-market.
A student who chooses to pursue SHSM designation will be provided the opportunity to acquire sector recognized certification and training. The cost of this training will be provided within the SHSM budget. However, all aspects of this program must be met prior to graduation in order for the student to acquire the designation on their diploma. It is imperative that the student make every effort to attend training and certification sessions. Likewise, two credits of cooperative education are required for students to gain this certification. Before students enroll in the program, an understanding that each SHSM student needs to take two co-op courses - whether it being during/after school or in the summer - needs to occur.
The Greater Essex County District School Board currently offers Specialist High Skills Major programs in the following areas: Agriculture; Arts & Culture; Business; Construction; Energy; Environment, Health & Wellness, Hospitality & Tourism; Information & Communications Technology; Manufacturing and Transportation.
